Play Day

• Thursday will be SMS play day. Your child may bring in a toy from home they are willing to share with others. We will spend the day practicing our social learning through play. I promise your kids (and their teachers) will come home tired!!!  Your child may wear their costume to school if they would like to, please leave accessories resembling weapons at home.

Here's just a glimpse of what we've been working on:

• Learned the steps of writing a story
• Began to learn how to compare numbers using the symbols <, >, =
• Enjoyed Fire Safety Day with the fire department
• Learned how to play Word Wall I Spy
• Learned some strategies for solving tricky words in reading
• Did a craft with the Koalas
• Made a life sized scarecrow craft

Questions to ask:

• What did the firefighters teach you?
• What crafts did you do with the Koala? 
• What does your scarecrow look like? 

October 18th

• Began our narrative writing unit
• Practiced building numbers using tens and ones
• Learned about how maple syrup is made
• Practiced reading snap words in funny voices
• Set reading goals and recorded how we did
• Did math with the Koalas
• Read lots of fall books
• Created our very own Loon playlist

• How many books do you read during reading time?
• What songs did you request for the Loon playlist?
• Who was your Koala buddy?
• What are you writing about? 

October 11th

• Finished up our Mo Willems writing unit
• Began to work on understanding place value
• Learned about how the alphabet was formed
• Practiced some new snap words
• Kicked off our RAH 
• Practiced rereading to smooth out our voice
• Went to our first school assembly of the year 
• Got new VIP spots on the rug
• Introduced our Choose Love social learning program 
• Tried our first SeeSaw assignment

IMPORTANT

Hey everyone! Thank you so much for your patience and kind emails last week. I am so happy to be back with the loons again! Here are a couple updates:

• RAH-Tonight we begin our Reading At Home program. You will see a folder in your child's backpack explaining how it works. This is not "homework" and it should not feel like a chore. It is a chance for your loon to show off their new and improving reading skills, doing this regularly is very beneficial in the long run but I know life happens so don't worry if it falls through the cracks now and then. :) 
• Open House is rescheduled to Friday 10/18 at 7:50 am. Please enter through the main office with your child. When you're ready to head out your child can head out to morning recess. 
• Be on the lookout for parent teacher conference sign ups coming out soon. It is at the top of my to-do list and will be shared on here. 

Update

Hi Loon Families,
I am so sad to have to be writing this but unfortunately on Saturday I was in the hospital with an unexpected medical issue. I will be okay but as of right now I am unable to be at school. I was hoping to be back on my feet by Thursday but it is looking like this will not be the case. Our classroom will be rescheduling our Open House to an alternate date. I am so sorry about this inconvenience but I will keep you posted with details when they are available. It looks like I may be out the rest of the week but I assure the loons are in good hands. Thank you for your patience with this!

Week of September 26th

Important dates:

• SMS Open House October 3rd
• Our classroom will be open at 6:00 for your Loon to be your guide to show off all their awesome work and favorite parts of our room! This is different from past years, the whole family is welcome so no babysitters needed! We can't wait to see you!

Here's just a glimpse of what we've been working on:

• Finished celebrating each loon as a star of the day
• Learned how to play "Trash" a great game for home too! 
• Read the book What Do You Do With a Problem? and How to Lose All Your Friends
• Spent time with our Wolf Packs
• Practiced writing our name with letters the right size
• Began reading our first issue of National Geographic 
• Made our class rules

Bonus News: 

I did get married on Saturday and had the most amazing weekend. The Loons made me the cutest book of marriage advice and decorating the classroom for me to return to! It was the sweetest surprise. Some great pieces of advice include take boat rides, go to disney together, go on a picnic and eat lots of cake! I'm hoping to maintain my email address throughout the year but will keep you posted! I am happy to go by Miss Rowley or Mrs. Geddes for the rest of the year 💕
