February 23rd

Some things we did this week:
  • Cat in the Hat artwork
  • Learned about Abraham Lincoln
  • Discovered some odd Olympic sports
  • Finished up our Word Detective unit
  • Worked on giving book reviews
  • Worked on adding with regrouping in written form
Some things to ask your child:
  • What are special about Dr. Seuss books? 
  • What are you writing about in your opinion book?
  • What is sight word BINGO?
  • What books do you think are 5-star books? 
Important Dates:
  • NO SCHOOL March 13th

I highly recommended taking advantage of the opportunity to hear Christine Hertz speak about Growth Mindset March 5th, 6:30-8:00 pm.

February 16th

Some things we did this week:
  • Learned how to use words we already know to sound out new words
  • Enjoyed a "family-style" breakfast in our classroom
  • Experienced a real earthquake! 
  • Acted out how to react to a bully
  • Learned about how the heart pumps blood
  • Read Midnight on the Moon 
  • Started adding with regrouping! 
  • Began opinion writing
Some things to ask your child:
  • What is "The Loon Way"? 
  • What was your favorite part of Valentine's Day breakfast?
  • How can words you know help you figure out words you don't know?
  • What's an upstander?

  • We DO have school on President's Day, sorry for the confusion last week!

February 9th

Some things we did this week:
  • Learned how to break big words up into smaller parts
  • Began adding 2-digit numbers
  • Celebrated the 100th day of school!!!
  • Visited the moon!
  • Kicked off the Olympics with a whole school assembly. Eric Flaim of Stratham showed off his speed skating medals and even brought along an Olympic torch! 
  • Learned about the importance of helmets
  • Dipped into opinion writing

  • What was your favorite 100th day center?
  • What's meditation? What's belly breathing?
  • Who did you read with during flashlight Friday? 
  • What's the 100+ minute club?

  • February 14th Class Friendship Breakfast. Still waiting on money from a couple kids, please send that in Monday! We will exchange valentines in the afternoon.

Early Release Day!

Our early release day has changed slightly due to the weather on Wednesday. Students will leave at 12:00. Can't wait to celebrate the 100th day with them! Be on the lookout for lots of Seesaw pictures!

February 2

Thank you so much! The 1st grade raised $1,593 for The Georgie Badiel Foundation! With that money they will be able to restore one well and maintain it for 2 years. I'm still hoping we will raise a little bit more. If we raise $2,000 we will be able to restore 3 wells and teach the village women how to maintain it, providing both, jobs and water to people in need. We have already heard back from the organization and we certainly exceeded their expectations!!! 

Some things we did this week:
  • Lots of market prep work! 
  • Learned how to break big words into parts we know
  • Practiced adding and subtracting 10 to 2-digit numbers
  • Learned about why lunar eclipses occur
  • Started planning for our trip to space
Some things to ask your child:
  •  How does an eclipse happen?
  • Who did you read with for flashlight Friday? 
  • Were you excited to reach your goal for Georgie? 
Important Dates:
  • EARLY RELEASE DAY: FEBRUARY 7th
  • Valentine's Day breakfast February 14th $2.00 per student for a full french toast stick breakfast in the cafe I will send more information home as the time approaches.
  • 100th day is looking like it will be February 7th don't forget about our 100th day project
