THANK YOU!

Thank you so much for the beautiful gift basket to help get me ready for summer! I definitely feel very spoiled by all of you! I cannot believe we are already in the final stretch of school, if I don't see you have a wonderful summer! I look forward to seeing my 2nd graders in the fall :)

June 8th

Some things we did this week:
  • Began our end of year memory books
  • Shared our nonfiction writing with the Koalas
  • Started a "math experiment" grouping kids with the Koalas to meet everyone's needs. Kids worked in both classrooms and were with specifically targeted groups. 
  • Learned about volcanoes
  • Talked about ghost towns in our Magic Tree House book
  • Played a class kickball game 
  • Grand Lunch! First Grade Mall! Field Day! 
Some things to ask your child:
  • What was your favorite field day game? How do you play?
  • How did the math experiment go? 
  • Which book did you share with the Koalas? 
Important Dates:
  • Monday, June 11th- The Ultimate Treasure Hunt will take place for first grade in the afternoon.  Please have your child wear sneakers this day and bring a water bottle. We won't need volunteers. 
  • On Tuesday, June 12th (am only) END OF YEAR CELEBRATION AT STRATHAM HILL PARK. All first grade students will hike to Stratham Hill Park to celebrate a great year together. 
  • June 15th...Parent/Community Appreciation. We would love you to join us in the cafeteria at 8:45 to appreciate you, our volunteers!

Field Day Reminder

Tomorrow is field day please wear appropriate shoes and clothes, a complete change of clothes or 2, a towel would be wise, labeled water bottle with name and 1R, sunscreen should be applied at home. It should be a beautiful and fun-filled day!

June 1

Some things we did this week:
  • Made life size posters of our fictional characters
  • Worked on learning the names and value of coins 
  • Created loon nests for our STEAM challenge 
  • Completed our iReady end of year assessment 
  • Finished another Magic Tree House book
Some things to ask your child:
  • Why do you think a loon would like the nest you made?
  • What do loon eggs look like? 
  • What's your newest fiction book about?
Important Dates:
  • Grand Luncheon- Monday, June 4th
  • June 6th-Retirement Reception (After school in the library)
  • First Grade Mall- June 7th. We would love donations to supply our mall stores. Some items will be made by the students as well. This is an all student led event!
  • Field Day- Friday, June 8th Volunteers will be needed. Bring water bottles, sneakers, towel, and an extra change of clothes
  • Monday, June 11th- The Ultimate Treasure Hunt will take place for first grade in the afternoon.  Please have your child wear sneakers this day and bring a water bottle. We won't need volunteers.

Other news:
I will be getting a new puppy on Saturday and promised the kids to post a picture on the blog on Sunday so be on the lookout! This was a compromise from the originally suggested 24/7 "Winni Cam"

May 25th

Some things we did this week:
  • Made "Maps" of our new reading partners, highlighting great partner qualities
  • Began learning about money in preparation for our First Grade Mall
  • Started our end of year iReady math assessment
  • Continued working on writing our own fictional books
  • Closely monitored the loon cam, they spent all of Friday swimming around the nest...The eggs are coming soon!!!
  • Invented our own STEAM challenge
  •  Talked about worries then named and drew pictures of them
  • Learned about our "wizard brain" (prefrontal cortex) and "lizard brain" (amygdala) 
Some things to ask your child:
  • What's the name of your worry?
  • Who's your new reading buddy?
  • How are your plants looking?
  • What's going on with the loons? 
Important Dates:
  • Memorial Day- NO SCHOOL Monday, May 28th
  • Friday, June 1st-Wiggin Memorial Library visits our students to kick off their summer reading program. You can bring your child to the town library to sign them up.

  • Began watching the "Loon Cam" waiting for the eggs to be laid. Check it out at home with this link Loon Cam
  • Started our fiction writing unit
  • Made our own fortune cookie messages using life lessons from our books
  • Learned about tornadoes
  • Read a Horrible Harry book
  • Learned how to play new card games in math
  • Planted seeds in egg cartons

  • Who is the character in your fiction book?
